What’s new?

We’re rolling out our new dashboard and analytics revamp!

In last month’s newsletter, we mentioned that our new beautiful and functional dashboard revamp was in beta. Thank you so much to all of the users who opted in to the beta and provided valuable feedback!

Starting today (Sept 26), the revamped dashboard and a new “Strategy” interface will begin rolling out to all users.

The new Dashboard is here

The Dashboard and Analytics revamp includes sizable improvements for several of our foundational features.

  • New Strategy page that houses all functionality related to goal setting, programs, and smart dynamic adjustments on one page.
  • Expanded check-in functionality, so you can now change your check-in day or check-in early.
  • New bold, modern dashboard design that sets the stage for further expansions in functionality, including the ability to scale the app to new screen sizes.
  • New energy balance widget in the dashboard carousel that displays your energy consumption overlaid with your expenditure or targets, making it easier to understand the impact of your nutrition on your goals.
  • New visualization, insights, and in-app tutorials for favorite pages like Expenditure, Weight Trend, and Habits.
  • New customizable toolbar that makes it easy to access your favorite food logging utilities even faster.

We think you’re going to love the new modern design, enhanced analytics experiences, and useful feature additions.

Added nutrition targets, period, and fasting to data export

We also added several new items to our data export functionality this month: nutrition targets, period, and fasting data.

Here’s how to export your data to a spreadsheet:

  1. At the top of the screen in MacroFactor, tap the person icon
  2. Under the section titled “General,” choose “Data and Privacy”
  3. Tap “Generate Spreadsheet”

You’ll instantly receive an easy-to-read, organized spreadsheet where you can see your daily expenditure, weight trend, weight, calories and macros, nutrition targets, period, fasting data, and more over the lifetime of your use of the app.

It’s interesting data to dig in to and can be extremely useful information to share with your doctor or coach!

How to get the newest version of the app:

Note: The new release will gradually roll out to devices. It will take 1-7 days for the update to make it to everyone. After 1 day, any iOS user should be able to manually initiate the update from the App Store.

If you have app updates turned on, you will get the newest version automatically. If you want to manually update the app, you can find instructions for iPhone here and instructions for Android here.

What’s noteworthy?

Our first user survey

We want to hear from you: Fill out a brief survey and be entered to win MacroFactor merch!

MacroFactor has now been out in the world for one year. As we reflect on the past year and consider the future, we want to provide the opportunity for you to give feedback as well.

Please consider filling out this brief survey about your experience with MacroFactor. It should only take 5-10 minutes.

If you fill out the survey, you’ll be entered to win a MacroFactor merch item of your choice. We’ll randomly select 10 winners in early October.

MacroFactor t-shirts

These items are not for sale, so make sure to enter the giveaway if you want to get your hands on an MF t-shirt or cap. We have unisex blue and gray t-shirts, women’s blue and gray shirts, and a black logo cap.

You can also enter the giveaway via Instagram. More details on that here.

Reverse Dieting: Hype vs Evidence

Some MacroFactor users have asked if reverse dieting is possible within MacroFactor, or if there’s a more suitable alternative we’d recommend instead of reverse dieting. For both questions, the answer is yes.

To further explain, Eric wrote an excellent new article about reverse dieting for the MacroFactor website this month.

In the article, Eric explores the research related to reverse dieting, which tells a much different story than the hyped-up anecdotes you’ll see on social media. He also explains why reverse dieting often appears to work in the short term while falling flat in the long term, and why “dynamic maintenance” is a more flexible and less tedious strategy that offers every single benefit that reverse dieting actually delivers. What’s next?

Custom food and recipe sharing

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve made a huge breakthrough in our research on sharing functionality in the app, and we’ll be bringing secure recipe and custom food sharing to MacroFactor very soon.

That means you’ll be able to share recipes and foods you create with family and friends who also use MacroFactor.

We’re so excited about this feature and we know y’all will be too (recipe sharing is one of the most-requested features on our public roadmap.)

Make sure you’re plugged in to the MacroFactor app community on Facebook, the subreddit, or Instagram to be notified right away when these sharing features become available.

3 major themes for future development

On the occasion of our first anniversary earlier this month, we published our first MacroFactor Annual Report.

In the report, we reflect on the improvements made to MacroFactor in its first year, and provide a sneak peek at the development we’re planning for Year 2 and beyond.

While we can’t reveal all of our plans, we feel confident in naming three major themes for future development.

  1. Expanding micronutrient features and analytics
  2. Rolling out a beautiful and thoughtful desktop version
  3. Revamping the food timeline design and functionality

Read the Annual Report to learn more about each of these, and to get a sneak peek at a very early concept design of MacroFactor’s desktop experience.

Updated and expanded roadmap

After clarifying our development priorities during the Annual Report process, we updated and expanded our public roadmap to reflect the features we’ve planned, ones we’re considering, and more.

You can also submit features for consideration and vote on the upcoming features that are the highest priority to you, which will help guide future development priorities.

Check out the newly updated roadmap here.
